Apparently, Everyone’s a Runner Now

Running in Amsterdam is having a very social moment. With race season kicking off and run clubs filling the city, we’re looking at why running together has become about much more than the kilometres.

Running season is officially taking over the city.

Amsterdam is entering running season. The Dam tot Damloop is around the corner. The Amsterdam Marathon isn't far behind. And on pretty much any given morning, there's a group of people running through the city together. Running has always been popular. But lately, something about it feels different. It's become very social.

Running, But Make It Social

This year's Dam tot Damloop 10 Mile sold out within an hour. And outside the big races, run clubs are popping up everywhere, bringing people together for distances that could just as easily have been run alone. Except that's kind of the point.

A run now comes with music, familiar faces, new people and somewhere to hang out afterwards. For plenty of people, it's as much a social plan as it is a workout. We've been seeing the same thing happen at our own Live Saucy Runs. The first few editions came with lots of new faces. Now, we're increasingly seeing the same people show up again. They recognise each other. They bring friends. At our NDSM run, we even overheard a group recording a video for someone who normally joins but had missed that edition.

“WHERE ARE YOU?!” Skipping Run Club now comes with consequences.

Why Running Works for Us

We didn't start organising runs just because running happens to be having a moment.

Live Saucy is about getting out there, trying things, meeting people and not taking yourself too seriously. Running through the city with a big group and music turned up fits into that pretty naturally. And the fact that running is having such a social moment makes it even more fun to watch the group grow.

Our runs move around too. We start at different Salsa Shop locations, explore another part of the city and end up back where we started for food afterwards. Later this month, we're doing it again. New starting point. New route. Probably quite a few familiar faces. And with running season officially here, we have a feeling we won't be the only ones out there.
