If granny gets it, we’re doing it right

If someone walks into a restaurant hungry and walks out confused, something went wrong. That simple idea is what kicked off something we call the _Granny Test_, and it’s quietly reshaping how our shops work.

Clarity beats cleverness

The Granny Test is straightforward: the experience should be so clear that my granny could order without help. No explaining. No awkward standing around. No panic at the menu.

Right now, Salsa Shop looks good, but looking good isn’t enough. Mexican fast casual still isn’t second nature for a lot of people in the Netherlands. Burrito, bowl, tacos… for first-timers, that’s already a decision before they’ve even started ordering.

Add kiosks, a second make line, digital menus, and suddenly the flow gets muddy. People hesitate. They don’t know where to start. They rush choices or pick something that doesn’t really fit them. That’s not a food problem. That’s an experience problem.

The Granny Test forces us to zoom out and watch what actually happens: from the moment someone sees the shop, to the second they leave with food in their hands. Where do they stop? Where do they doubt? Where do they need help, but don’t ask?

Designing for confidence, not pressure

Passing the Granny Test isn’t about dumbing things down. It’s about removing friction.

We’re simplifying menus, repeating clear visual cues, highlighting a few strong heroes, and making the choice feel safe. Pick your style. Pick your filling. We’ll take it from there.

Kiosks and counter shouldn’t compete, they should support each other. Speed where it helps. Human contact where it matters.

And most importantly: hospitality comes back into focus. A host who spots uncertainty. A team member who gives a ten-second explanation. Small moments that turn hesitation into confidence.

So what’s in it for you?

An experience that feels intuitive instead of intimidating. Less pressure. Better choices. And a first visit that actually makes you want to come back.

If granny can order in thirty seconds and leave smiling, chances are you’ll be just fine too.
