Lectures. Work. Gym. Drinks. Deadlines. Somehow remembering to do your laundry.
Student life isn't exactly known for leaving loads of empty space in your calendar. And food is often one of the first things that has to fit around everything else.
The funny thing is: young people actually care quite a lot about eating well. Recent research among 16- to 27-year-olds in the Netherlands found that 6 in 10 would eat healthier if doing so was easier. More than half also said health becomes less important when they're short on time.
So maybe the problem isn't wanting to eat well. It's doing it when your next lecture starts in 25 minutes.
Make Easy Work for You
Eating well doesn't have to mean meal prepping seven identical containers every Sunday.
Having a few easy options you know work for you can already make busy days a lot easier. Keep simple ingredients at home. Throw some fruit or snacks in your bag. Know where you can get an actual meal near university, work or the gym when cooking isn't going to happen.
Because convenience isn't necessarily the enemy. In fact, research from ABN AMRO Bank shows that speed and ease are particularly important barriers to healthy eating among 18- to 30-year-olds.
The trick is finding convenient options that still give you some choice over what you're eating.
Build Something That Works for Your Day
That's also where a build-your-own meal comes in pretty handy.
At Salsa Shop, you choose what's going into your burrito or bowl. Rice, beans, vegetables, protein, toppings, salsa or whatever combination happens to sound good that day.
Heading to the gym later? Hungry after a full day of lectures? Want something lighter before heading out? You don't need the exact same meal every time.
And perhaps that's the most realistic way to think about eating well as a student. Not trying to make every meal perfect, but having options that work when life gets busy.
Because sometimes you have time to cook.
And sometimes you have 25 minutes until your next lecture.
